Villa d’Este, also known as the Tivoli Gardens, was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este (1509-1572). These gardens were created with the intent of giving beauty and life to their surroundings. The garden lacked a sufficient water supply and thus was renovated in the 1930s by Attilio Rossi (1909-1994). The fountain was originally a waterfall which was constructed by Bernini more than two centuries earlier.
